Prosection of the Horse DVD
Professor Rod Else
This DVD guides you step-by-step with a commentary through the post-mortem examination of the horse. A technique where assistance is available is described but there is also illustration of a prosection method that can be followed by an investigator working without an assistant.
The DVD is arranged in sections to enable access to the resources. There are inserted sections where particular lesion considerations are important, eg. appearance of the intestines in dysautonomia ("equine grass sickness"). The sections covered are as follows:
- Section 1 Description of a prosection technique with the horse in lateral recumbency. This is particularly appropriate where post-mortem examination has to be carried out single-handedly in the field or stable where death has occured.
Running time - 29 minutes
- Section 2 A more extensive technique of prosection is described with the cadaver in dorso-ventral recumbency and where specialist facilities and assistance are available.
Running time - 28 minutes
- Section 3 Examination and description of major organs in the body (alimentary tract, liver, spleen, kidneys). Reference is made to some specific pathological features, (eg. changes in the intestines in “grass sickness”). Dissection of the heart and removal of the brain are described.
Running time - 27 minutes
